Weekend Baking

I look forward with great anticipation to the weekends (I’m sure you’ve never felt the same way, right?). And each weekend, I try to have something to look forward to so my week seems a little more bearable.

Last weekend, it was our little spontaneous date that Matt didn’t know about until I told him to meet me at the movie theater in 20 minutes.

This weekend, it’s baking.

I’ve been a baker for as long as I can remember. When I was 6 or so, my mom introduced me to baking by teaching me how to make “Jack ‘O’ Lantern Loaf” (pumpkin chocolate chip bread), which I then promptly requested to make every week for the next 11 years.

I’ve been hooked ever since.

I love all aspects of baking–the flour that shimmers through the air as I pour it in the mixture, the aroma of rising dough, the finishing touches of melted butter or powdered sugar, the smile that breaks across Matt’s face as he takes that crucial first taste . . .

So even though our plans for the weekend might not be so exciting to anyone else, I’m just awaiting the thrill of pulling out my stack of shortening-smeared recipes and filling my home with the smells of something wonderful.

Are you a baker? If so, what’s your favorite recipe? I’m on the lookout for some new ones to try 🙂
